What is Dry Eye Syndrome?

Dry eye syndrome occurs when the eyes cannot produce enough tears or when the quality of the tears is poor. This can lead to a range of symptoms that range from distracting to debilitating. In severe cases, DES can cause damage to the cornea (surface of the eye), leading to vision problems.

What are Common Symptoms of Dry Eye?

You may have dry eye syndrome if you experience any of the following:

  • Irritation and redness
  • Burning or stinging
  • sensitivity to light
  • Difficulty wearing contact lenses
  • Blurred vision or fluctuations in vision
  • Stringy mucus around the eyes
  • Eye fatigue
  • Grittiness or foreign body sensation

If you notice any of these symptoms, we recommend promptly scheduling an appointment with your eye care specialist at Peters Family Eyecare.

Through a proper examination and diagnosis, we can provide you with the necessary treatment to alleviate your discomfort and prevent any further damage. Remember, early detection and treatment can greatly improve your eye health and overall well-being.

What is OptiLight by Lumenis?

OptiLight by Lumenis is a non-invasive and FDA-approved treatment that uses a gentle and safe intense pulsed light (IPL) to manage dry eye syndrome.

The procedure takes about 10-15 minutes and can provide several benefits to improve eye health.

The pulses of light used in OptiLight can help increase tear break-up time, which means that tears will remain on the eye surface longer and provide more lubrication. This can help alleviate dryness, itching, and burning sensations in the eyes.

OptiLight can also reduce the amount of Demodex mites and bacteria around the eyes, which can contribute to eye infections and other eye conditions, like blepharitis. By reducing the amount of these microorganisms, OptiLight can help maintain a healthier eye environment.

In addition, OptiLight can decrease inflammation in the area around the eyes. Inflammation is a common cause or contributor to dry eye, and reducing it can help improve eye comfort and reduce symptoms.

OptiLight can also improve meibomian gland functionality. These glands produce the oily layer of tears that helps prevent evaporation and keeps the eyes moist. By improving meibomian gland function, OptiLight can help maintain healthy tear production and reduce dry eye symptoms.

What Can You Expect from the Treatment?

If your dry eye specialist determines that OptiLight is right for you, they will thoroughly explain what to expect at every stage of the treatment.

Before the treatment, you should avoid:

  • Getting Botox for at least 3 months prior
  • Using brightening serums for one week prior
  • Using tanning beds one month prior
  • Taking oral isotretinoin, tetracycline, or doxycycline in the 3 months prior to your appointment

During an OptiLight treatment, your eye doctor will apply a cooling gel to the target area and cover your eyes with protective shields.

Then your eye doctor will apply the IPL device to your skin and you’ll feel the light’s warmth. Most patients don’t report any pain or discomfort at all during the treatment.

Although side effects are rare, it is possible to experience slight dryness or grittiness in the eyes for the day following an OptiLight procedure. However, these symptoms are typically mild and temporary, and they can be easily managed with preservative-free artificial tears.

It is also important to protect your skin after the procedure. OptiLight may cause sensitivity, so it is recommended to avoid sun exposure and wear sunscreen to protect your skin from harmful UV rays.

Is OptiLight Right For You?

While the best way to determine whether OptiLight could benefit you is through a dry eye consultation with your eye doctor, here are some factors to consider.

In general, OptiLight isn’t recommended for patients who:

  • Take certain medications, like Accutane
  • Have active acne
  • Suffer from certain skin disorders
  • Are susceptible to keloid scarring
  • Have severe scarring
  • Have severely sunburned recently
